Language Arts
The language arts program is a readiness program designed to develop pre-reading and pre-writing skills in students at all levels. A variety of multi-sensory activities assist the students in developing letter recognition, phonological awareness, sound/symbol recognition, position and direction concepts, oral language and critical thinking skills, handwriting, and an appreciation for literature and poetry. During the course of the year the students work through the alphabet in sequential order. Through a whole language approach they also experience a variety of literature selections where characters, story line, prediction of outcomes, sequence of events, and attention to detail in illustrations are emphasized.
Math
The mathematics program is an activity-centered, multi-sensory program using a variety of manipulatives ranging from pattern blocks and unifix cubes to collections of "junk" boxes. During the course of the school year, the students will make discoveries during free exploration and then move on to work and problem solve with patterning, sorting and classifying, numeral writing, counting, graphing, measuring and investigating numbers at the concept level.
Science
Science at the Pre-K level has three main objectives: to develop the ability to solve problems through the use of scientific methods (principally, that of observation); to develop a positive attitude toward the study of science; and to develop an interest in and appreciation of science in the world around us. The program provides a variety of simple experiences in biology (plants, animals, nutrition, the senses), earth science (the soil, rocks, air, water, the seasons of the year), and chemistry and physics (heat, light, magnetism, simple machines).
Social Studies
The social studies program seeks to broaden the concepts of self, family, community, citizenship, seasonal holidays and other cultures. We recognize that a student's total living environment affects her attitude and abilities in the school setting; therefore, we seek to enhance her understanding of self and her relationship to others in the community.
Religion
In the study of Religion, Pre-K uses a variety of activities and topics for discussion. The students begin to develop a sense of Christian community, build a foundation for understanding their importance in God's family and establish an appreciation for all the gifts of God's creation.
