Language Arts

The language arts program is a multi-sensory program utilizing visual, kinesthetic, and auditory activities to teach reading readiness and beginning reading skills.  Its goal is to meet the special needs of emergent readers as well as provide reinforcement for more advanced students. A strong phonetic approach along with literature and poetry emphasizes comprehension, context, recall, sequence and critical thinking. Beginning spelling and writing skills as well as oral language activities are integrated into the program.

Math

The mathematics program is an activity-centered, multi-sensory program using a variety of manipulative and individualized materials.  The goal of the program is to help the students develop understanding and insight into the patterns of mathematics through the use of concrete materials.  The activities are designed to help children see relationships and interconnections in math and enable them to deal flexibly with mathematical ideas and concepts with ease. The students begin by working on patterns, sorting and classifying, counting, graphing, estimating, and measuring. As the year progresses, they move on to numbers at the concept, connecting and symbolic levels, and explore addition and subtraction.  Problem solving and discovery learning are emphasized throughout the program.

Science

The science program promotes an awareness of self and environment, the development of critical thinking skills, deductive reasoning, oral language skills, vocabulary development and an introduction to the scientific method. Emphasis is placed on learning through observation, discovery and experimentation.  Areas of study include the five senses, nutrition, plants, animals, seasons/weather, and insects.

Social Studies

The social studies program promotes an understanding of ourselves and our relationship to the world around us, the development of critical thinking skills, vocabulary development, observation, and problem-solving skills.  The students learn about themselves as individuals, and expand their explorations and study of the family, neighborhood, and communities, both past and present.  The students are introduced to life in other cultures, and to maps and globes as representations of something real.  The study and celebration of major holidays develop an awareness and appreciation of our country's origins and history.

Religion

The religion program focuses on providing the students with the experience of belonging to the Christian community.  Through prayer, discussions, and activities, the students develop a basis for their moral development. The program attempts to affirm the student's self-worth as belonging to God; to help them learn that God's love comes to them through their families and friends; to encourage the students to find ways to love God and others; and to come to an ever-growing awareness of God's steadfast love for each one of them. Through the observance and celebration of Sacred Heart feasts/traditions and Christian holy days, the students develop a deeper awareness of God's action in the world and of their own importance as part of God's loving creation.

Our sexuality and family life education begins in Kindergarten. The program is based on an age appropriate theme, "Created in God’s Image".
