Language Arts
The first grade reading program is literature based with a strong emphasis on phonics, reading, comprehension, and critical thinking. Many concepts are introduced including cause and effect, drawing conclusions, sequencing, predicting outcomes, contractions, antonyms, synonyms and alphabetical order. The mechanics of writing are introduced through journals and creative writing. Scientific spelling, a phonetically based spelling program, begins at this level.
Math
The first grade math program continues with the use of manipulatives in order to enhance the student's number sense, numeration and problem-solving applications. Fractions, graphing, time, money, estimation and measurement are explored in a more comprehensive manner. Addition and subtraction of whole numbers includes basic fact families and simple two-digit operations.
Science
Science at this level encompasses the following units: plants, animals, frogs, health, balance and motion, insects, the earth and its environment. Hands-on experiences are used to teach the skills of observation, prediction and drawing conclusions. Children's literature, research books, educational magazines and audio-visual materials are used as teaching tools.
Social Studies
The topics covered in the first grade social studies program include simple economics, geography and basic map reading skills, histories of various cultures, famous persons and special holidays. A whole language approach is used to teach various thematic units. Research material, children's literature, audio-visual materials, and computer programs are used in class presentations.
Religion
The theme of the first grade religion program is that God loves us and gave us His son, Jesus, as an expression of that love. The children are led to a deeper understanding of their religious beliefs and traditions through biblical stories, the lives of the Saints, church holidays, and Sacred Heart traditions. The students are introduced to the Church community and their role as members of that community. Prayer and liturgical participation are integral components of the program.
The sexuality and family life program is an age appropriate theme. The curriculum is, "Called to Communion with God, who is Love".
