Philosophy

One of the aims of the education at Duchesne is "personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom."  A high standard of integrity is presented as a value to be obtained through growth in self-discipline.  This growth in self-discipline includes the following qualities:

  • Genuine concern for each member of the school community
  • Courtesy and consideration for others as a sign of this respect
  • A sense of responsibility and of accountability
  • Personal decision-making and acceptance of the consequences for these decisions

Rules are made to ensure safety and to promote the general welfare of all.  Faculty strives to assist students in becoming self-disciplined and in learning to be considerate of others.

Rules and consequences for infractions of rules are made known to all students.  Thus, when a student chooses to break a rule, she at the same time chooses the consequences.

The Positive Discipline program in the classroom is an integral part of the Lower School curriculum.  Through the use of class meetings essential life skills are taught that empower students with a positive attitude for success in all areas of life:  school, work, family and society.  Students learn social skills, such as listening, taking turns, hearing different points of view, negotiating, communicating, helping one another and taking responsibility for their behavior.

School Regulations
Students are expected to follow the school's regulations regarding:
Food and Beverages

  • Eating and drinking are allowed only in the dining room or outside areas. Food and drink is NEVER allowed in the THEATER, GYMNASIUM, LIBRARY or CHAPEL
  • Students are not allowed to chew gum anywhere on campus.

The following behaviors are unacceptable:

    • Disrespect or defiance
    • Stealing or vandalism
    • Cheating or lying
    • Vulgar and obscene language
    • Absenting oneself from the school campus or class
    • Continued disregard for school rules
    • Disregarding or violating the technology AUP
    • Any behavior which is dangerous or violent to the student personally or to others
    • Harassment, bullying or threatening behavior which manifests itself verbally or by unkind gestures towards another
    • Possession of weapons or drugs

In response to inappropriate and serious behaviors, the faculty, counselors, and administration will look at each case individually, and determine an appropriate consequence which both helps the student grow in her personal responsibilities and meets the needs of the community. The counselor will follow up with all students involved in the incident.

  1. Discipline is first handled by the homeroom teacher who determines an age appropriate consequence.
  2. The homeroom teacher may also collaborate with the school counselor and/or parents.
  3. If negative behaviors persist, the Head of Lower School will require a meeting with the parents of the student.
  4. Outside counseling and therapy may be required for a student to correct social behaviors.
  5. If behaviors do not improve, students will be placed on probation, or asked to leave.

In the event of damage to school property, the student is responsible for restitution.  Students who lose or damage textbooks, workbooks, or other school materials/property will be charged the replacement cost.

Parents are expected to support the Lower School in the programs and activities, which are integral parts of its educational philosophies.

Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart strongly opposes any harassment of its employees and students, including sexual harassment or violent behavior.  Sexual harassment has been determined to be a form of sex discrimination which is expressly prohibited by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and will not be tolerated at Duchesne.   Our employees and students must be allowed to work and study in an environment free from unsolicited and unwelcome intrusions.
Harassment directed at anyone is improper and will not be tolerated.  This applies to harassment of any kind, but most especially to sexual harassment.  Sexual harassment can include, but is not limited to, the following examples of unacceptable behavior:
