Health Records

Records of immunizations required by the Health Department must be on file at the school by the first day of classes each year.  A student whose records are not on file will not be allowed to attend school until the records are received.  This is a state law.

Clinic

When a student does not feel well, she must get permission from a teacher to go to the school nurse.  The nurse will make the decision as to whether the student is to go home.  The student is not to call home to be picked up without permission of the nurse or a school administrator.  If the student is to go home, she must first report to the Middle School office and sign out before being picked up.

Parents are encouraged to observe their children for signs and symptoms of contagious disease.  In the case of contagious disease, the school should be notified immediately.  Students identified with symptoms of disease are to be excluded from school until free of symptoms or a physician's statement of non-communicability is produced.  After an illness, students should be free of fever (fever is considered a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above) for 24 hours prior to re-admission.  If they have been nauseated and vomited during the night, it is requested that they be kept home the following day.  If there is a case of head lice in your family, it is imperative that the school is notified immediately.  A lice treatment shampoo must be given before your daughter can return to school.

Medication

Students should never have any type of medicine in their possession during the school day. All medicines, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, should be given directly to the school nurse with enclosed directions and a note of request from the parent. The student is responsible to report to the nurse when it is time to take the medicine.  With the exception of inhalers, students are not allowed to carry any type of medication with them.

If parents wish the school to provide Tylenol or Advil to their child when ill, a Physician and Parent's release form must be completed and turned in to the Middle School office or the nurse.  No Tylenol or Advil will be given without the signed release form.

If a student is to take a prescription drug on a regular basis (i.e. at lunch every day), the doctor must fill out a form stating the name of the drug, the dosage, the time of administration, and the possible side effects.  If the prescription changes during the year, the new prescription needs to be sent to the nurse immediately.

If a student needs to take a prescribed drug for a short period of time (e.g. antibiotics), it should be sent to school in the original container with enclosed directions and a note of request from the parent.

In all cases, the student is responsible to report to the nurse when it is time to take the medicine.

School Counselor

The counselor works in conjunction with the Middle School Head and the Dean of Students.  Students may make their own appointments with her, either individually or in groups.  Likewise, the Head of Middle School, Dean of Students, teachers, or parents may refer any student to the counselor.  Parents are welcome to call or come in if they have concerns about their children they want to discuss.  The purpose of the counselor is to:

Provide support for students as they change and mature physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

Provide support for students in their relationships with peers, teachers, parents, and others.

Assist in the identification of particular students who may be having behavioral or emotional difficulties in the classroom.

Provide support for students as they learn to better understand and accept responsibility for themselves and their actions.

Direct families to professional counseling and other appropriate resources outside the school when such direction is requested or recommended.

Assist in the planning of presentations for students, faculty, or parents on topics addressing various developmental, emotional, or behavioral concerns.

Special Issues

Pregnancy

In the case of pregnancy, the student’s welfare will be of utmost concern.  Each situation will be considered individually and confidentially.

Controlled Substances and Alcohol

The use of illicit drugs and the unlawful possession and use of alcohol are wrong and harmful.  Such use may result in suspension, expulsion, or referral for prosecution.
