  Computer Studies

Computer studies provides students with a broad range of skills and experiences to prepare them for our increasingly global and technological society.   Students are exposed to a variety of technologies from the network environment in which they work, to the more specific software applications in the courses offered below.

Laptop Integration Program    .5 credit
Grades 9 - 12  Required
All students at Duchesne are required to use their laptop computers as an integral tool in their courses.  Laptop integration is a program designed to give students "hands-on" computer experience using application software they will need for academic, personal and business purposes.  The goal of the program is to integrate the use of laptop computers into the curriculum to enable students to use technology as a tool to solve problems.  Students will be able to select the appropriate technology for a task, access, analyze and evaluate information, make informed decisions, and communicate information in different formats through a variety of electronic media.

806 - Computer Programming I     1 year
Grades 9 - 12  .5 credit

This course begins with programming basics, introducing students to the notion of programming and the steps involved in developing a program.  Students learn to use pseudocode and flowcharts to outline the logic of a simple program.  The main features of Java, C++, Visual Basic and/or Python programming languages are introduced in the course.  A variety of practical exercises is employed to teach the use of operators, variables, flow control methods and arrays.  Students will create flexible, interactive programs that reflect the behavior of those in the real world.  The course will meet three times a week for a year.

Computer Programming (Summer)    .5 credit
Grades 9 - 12

This course begins with programming basics, introducing students to the notion of programming and the steps involved in developing a program.  Storyboarding, flowcharting, and pseudocode build logic, sequencing and presentation skills.  The fundamentals of Visual Basic, including the use of operators, variables, flow control methods and arrays are learned.  Students will create flexible, interactive programs that reflect the behavior of those in the real world, including games for DASH Summer Camp students.  The course will meet five days a week for five hours for three weeks. Daily mandatory attendance.  Laptop required.

803 - Advanced Computer Applications    1 year
Grades 9 - 12   .5 credit
This is a project driven course covering digital photo editing and graphics, introductory video production, robotics, and introductory computer programming.  Students will become proficient in the use of Adobe Photoshop elements, Windows Movie Maker, NXT Lego Mindstorms and various beginner programming languages. Students use the following equipment over the course of the year: digital cameras, scanners, video cameras, CD/DVD burners, and various color printers.  The course will meet three times a week for a year.

805/816 - Yearbook (Desktop Publishing)     1 year
Grades 10 - 12   1 or .5 credit
(Prerequisite: Approval of teacher and Head of Upper School)
The students enrolled in this course produce the Duchesne Yearbook, L'Esprit.  During the school year, students learn the basics of desktop publishing.  Students plan page production, submission for meeting deadlines, coordinate ordering and distribution of books, and organize staff coverage of all school events.  They use Adobe InDesign and Photoshop Applications to produce the book.  Class members are required to attend an area summer workshop in July and attend Saturday work days at school as publisher deadlines approach.  Participation on the yearbook staff requires a substantial commitment of time and effort, as well as organizational skills, a strong sense of personal responsibility and the ability to work both independently and with a group.

807/811 - Computer Support    1 year
(Prerequisite: Approval of Computer Department)   .5 or 1 credit
Students in this course will be trained in the care and repair of desktop and laptop computers.  They will be responsible on a daily schedule for staffing the computer help desk (CAVE). They will evaluate and diagnose computer problems, make minor repairs or arrange for professional repair.  They will be trained in regular maintenance and servicing of computers.  Participation in this course requires strong organizational skills, a strong sense of personal responsibility, and the ability to work both independently and with a group, and a strong desire to learn the technical aspects of the computer.  Students will be expected to show respect and patience, as they will be working with both faculty and students.  Class members will be required to attend a week long training workshop.

809- Digital Graphics  1 year
Grades 10 - 12   .5 credit

Digital Graphics/Design is an introduction to design and imaging techniques using vector and bitmap images.  Topics include digital composition and photo editing, including color imaging, correction, manipulation and enhancement.  The students will become proficient in the use of the applications Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Freehand and Flash in order to produce and edit their digital projects.  The will learn to create and capture images with a digital camera, or scanner.  The course will meet three times a week for a year.
