Duchesne Academy is a member of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) league. It competes in Divison 6A-District 3, which includes St. Pius, St. Agnes, Inarnate Word Academy, and Kelly Beaumont.
Varsity teams from each sport compete for top honors to represent the district at the state level, at the end of the season. Sub-varsity teams are also offered in many sports to provide the athletes a way to develop and improve the skills required at the varsity level.
In the fall, girls can compete in golf, tennis, field hockey, cross-country and volleyball. Soccer, swimming and basketball are offered for the winter season. Track, golf, tennis, and softball are offered for the spring season.
The Athletic Department and College Counselor will assist students who desire to compete at the college level. In the last few years, some students have broadened their opportunities to attend top colleges and universities through athletics.
Athletics Policies Regarding Transportation
Unless otherwise instructed, students are expected and encouraged to ride the bus to an athletic event if a bus is provided. Under special circumstances and at the coach's and parent's discretion, Varsity athletes may be allowed to drive to and from away games with the proper documentation.
Students are encouraged to use their time wisely if they must wait for their game to be played. They should bring books or homework with them to the games.
Athletic Awards
There are separate criteria for each sport for earning a Varsity letter. The specific criteria for a given sport are determined by the Head Coach and approved by the Athletic Director.
An athlete who earns a varsity letter may purchase a Duchesne athletic jacket or an approved sweater for displaying her letter. An athlete who plays a given sport for all four years and has not earned a varsity letter will receive a letter and be eligible to purchase a jacket or sweater her senior year.
The award for the Most Valuable Senior Athlete will be decided jointly by all the coaches and the Athletic Director. This award will be given to a senior athlete who has played a minimum of two sports during the year at the Varsity level. She must be in good academic standing with a grade point average of at least 2.0 and no failing grades. In addition, she must have demonstrated the following:
· leadership during practices and games;
· encouragement given to others;
· a high level of skill development;
· enthusiasm and spirit;
· the drive to continue to improve.
The Theodore Munchak Award for dedication and spirit will be given yearly to a freshman, sophomore, or junior who has participated in the Duchesne athletics program and who is in good academic standing.
