  Social Awareness

A vital part of the curriculum at Duchesne Academy is the Social Awareness program and its four year community service requirement.  To meet this obligation, juniors and seniors leave campus every Wednesday to work for two hours at twenty sites in the Houston Area.  Freshmen and sophomores participate in a variety of group and individual projects throughout the year.  All students are provided opportunities to reflect on and grow in these experiences through discussion and journaling.  The continued success of this program is possible because of the very high degree of personal responsibility exercised by our students and the strong support of Duchesne families.

Freshman and Sophomore requirements are as follows:

  • Participation in four different approved service projects which involve interacting with the disadvantaged in some way.  Projects may be organized by the school, an organization, or the student's church or temple.  Students are encouraged to select a variety of service projects throughout the year, so they are exposed to different needs of society.

  • All projects must be documented, and a documentation form must be completed, signed and turned in for each service project completed.  The student will not receive credit for a service project without the completed form.

  • Students are asked to purchase a blank book or journal to keep throughout their upper school years.  They will be asked to reflect on each of their projects and periodically to turn in their journals to the Social Awareness Coordinator.

Guidelines for Junior/Senior Social Awareness:

  • Permission forms must be on file before the first on-site day.
  • Each student will travel directly to and from her site with her car pool.  No student will travel alone.  There should be no stops along the way, except to pick up lunch if necessary.
  • Only designated drivers have permission to drive.  Any changes must have prior approval from the Social Awareness Coordinator.
  • Each student will sign out outside the dining room and sign in at the Upper School office, signing ONLY for herself and indicating her car pool and correct departure and arrival times.
  • Students will wear uniform slacks, shoes, and any uniform shirt.  Oxford shirts must be tucked in.  If a site has dress requirements, the student will abide by those regulations.
  • The Social Awareness Coordinator must be informed immediately if a student will be absent from Social Awareness.  Call the school early in the morning and leave a message on Ext. 163.  This must be done in addition to notification of the Upper School Office.  In the case of an unexcused absence, arrangements must be made to make up the service hours missed.  Failure to notify the Social Awareness Coordinator of any absence will result in an automatic detention.
  • Students should avoid scheduling medical and other appointments during Social Awareness.
  • Normally, students work two hours at their sites, allowing approximately one hour for travel and lunch.  Any exception to this pattern must be approved by the Coordinator.
  • If a student encounters a problem getting to or from her site, she must notify the school office immediately.  Any problems at the site should be discussed with  the Coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Lunch meetings for site groups will be held from time to time throughout the year, and sites may be visited by faculty at any time.
  • Journals should be kept up to date with weekly reflections.  Each entry should be dated.  each should be reflective as well as descriptive and should end with a prayer or meditations.  Journals are due at the end of each semester.  Failure to turn in an acceptable journal may result in loss of credit.
  • All requirements must be met to the satisfaction of the Coordinator in order to receive credit each semester.  Social Awareness is graded on a pass/fail basis, and credit is a requirement for graduation.
